Global Service Event

Duke Energy employees and retirees tackle hundreds of community projects during the year, but our annual Global Service Event (GSE) is the hallmark of Duke Energy’s year-round volunteer program. Our 2009 GSE will begin on Earth Day, April 22, and continue through June 30.

GSE began in 1997 as a way for Duke employees to give back to the communities where they live and work. One of the unique aspects of the GSE is that it's a grassroots effort. Employees and retirees identify needs in their own communities and provide the leadership, volunteers and project management to improve nonprofit organizations through volunteerism. Duke Energy maintains an electronic “community page” on its employee web site where employees can lead projects or sign up to volunteer. The company also supports these volunteer efforts by offering employee grants that can provide supplies and equipment for qualifying projects.

During the 2008 Global Service Event, employees and retirees planned and participated in close to 500 volunteer projects and assisted 336 nonprofit partners in 137 communities across the U.S.

The Global Service Event is a way we can combine our resources and expertise across the company to help communities where we live and work.
