Clean Energy Impact
What is Clean Energy Impact?
It's affordable
CEI has a low cost of entry as you are purchasing renewable attributes from Duke Energy's existing renewable energy facilities.
It's easy
With no equipment to install and maintain your company can reach its sustainability goals simply by enrolling.
It's local
All Clean Energy Impact RECs originate from Duke Energy renewable generation in Florida.
It helps others
Your enrollment helps to reduce energy costs for ALL Florida customers.
How it works
1Your business enrolls.
As a participant, your company purchases a minimum of 1,000 RECs per year at a cost of $3.52 a REC, to help offset your electrical usage and achieve your environmental and sustainability goals.
2Renewable power is generated locally.
RECs will then be created from Duke Energy Florida renewable assets.
3Your business claims the REC.
Your company has exclusive rights to apply the renewable attributes to your own sustainability goals once we retire them on your behalf annually. Learn more about RECs here.
4You support local, clean energy.
RECs represent 1 MWh of energy from clean sources replacing energy that would otherwise come from traditional sources like coal and oil.

The basics of Clean Energy Impact
Frequently Asked Questions
- Clean Energy Impact is an optional program that provides participating customers with a simple, affordable way to achieve their sustainability goals and support local renewable energy through the purchase of renewable energy certificates directly from Duke Energy Florida’s renewable energy resources.
- Renewable energy certificates (RECs) are carefully measured and used to track renewable energy from the point of generation to a purchaser of each REC. Each REC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable energy sources (e.g., solar, wind, biomass or hydro) that displaces electricity on the grid that would otherwise come from traditional sources (e.g., oil and coal). Learn more about how RECs help make renewable energy possible.
- The CEI program furthers Duke Energy’s commitment to meet the various energy needs of our customers. Through CEI, Duke Energy is offering a measurable way for interested customers to support local renewable energy and to achieve sustainability goals. The program also aims to reduce energy costs for all Florida customers through the sale of RECs directly from Duke Energy Florida’s renewable energy resources.
- Any Duke Energy customer in Florida who is current on their bill is eligible for participation in the program.
- Duke Energy business customers can begin the program enrollment process by contacting Duke Energy via the interest form above. The program will then work quickly to meet the needs of your business in five steps:
- After submission of the interest form, a Duke Energy representative will follow up with you to help determine the percentage of your annual electricity use that the business would like to be renewable through the purchase of CEI RECs.
- Duke Energy will calculate the number of RECs required and provide pricing.
- If your business decides to move forward, a Clean Energy Impact REC purchase agreement will then be signed between Duke Energy and the customer.
- The customer can then choose to pay for their REC purchase either as an additional one-time charge on their Duke Energy bill or via a separate invoice.
- After payment, the customer will receive confirmation of their Clean Energy Impact REC purchase. Then at the appropriate time, the RECs will be retired on the customer’s behalf by Duke Energy.
- Effective August 1, 2024, the current REC price is $3.52 and business customers must purchase a minimum of 1,000 RECs annually to participate, making the minimum participation cost $3,520.00. However, it’s up to you how much you would like to pay based on how many RECs you choose to purchase above the 1,000 REC minimum. Duke Energy sets the per-block price for RECs at fair market value based on the current market rate on the tradeable market of applicable RECs. The price also includes an administrative fee not to exceed 20% of the REC price or a fixed amount based on the volume of RECs to cover the cost of operating the program. Each year in August, Duke Energy will update the REC price using the annual market rate for RECs and adjust the administrative fee as necessary.
Duke Energy sets the CEI REC price annually each August. The CEI REC price is based on the monthly average REC market rate for the previous 12 months. In addition to the average REC market rate, the CEI REC price also includes an administrative fee, which is intended to cover Duke Energy’s costs of operating the program. The administrative fee is also reviewed annually to evaluate if fees collected match the administrative expenses of the program, and is adjusted based on cost projections. However, the administrative fee will never exceed 20% of the average REC market rate.

- Duke Energy business customers can begin the program enrollment process by clicking "Start the Process" button above.
- Yes, in order to purchase RECs through the CEI program, Duke Energy business customers are required to enter into a service agreement with Duke Energy. Business customers must purchase a minimum of 1,000 RECs annually. Duke Energy representatives are available to help business customers determine how many RECs are needed for purchase to match the customer’s annual kWh energy usage before entering into the service agreement. Depending on the needs of the customer, CEI service agreements may range from a one-year term up to a five-year term (subject to approval and availability).
- The retirement of RECs will be done in the North American Renewables Registry™ (NAR). Nonresidential RECs will be retired in the customer’s name. Duke Energy will provide documentation of the REC retirement.
- RECs are available on a first-come, first-served basis subject to availability. Nonresidential customers must purchase a minimum of 1,000 RECs annually. There is no maximum number of RECs that customers may purchase. However, Duke Energy strongly recommends that customers only purchase enough RECs to cover their estimated monthly or annual kWh energy usage. The company may, at its discretion, implement an annual random selection process system and/or a waitlist if it determines that the demand for RECs exceeds the supply.
- The electricity generated from the renewable resources is put into the overall power supply grid along with electricity from all our other resources. Buying RECs through the program does not mean that renewable energy is being delivered straight from the source to your business.
There are currently 13 solar facilities being utilized for CEI, these sites are spread throughout 10 counties in Florida, and all are owned and operated by Duke Energy. The sites vary in size and renewable energy generation capacity from 5 to 75 MW.
- By participating in CEI, you are not only supporting local, renewable energy, you will also be helping all Duke Energy Florida customers. The revenue created from the sale of Duke Energy Florida RECs will be used to lower the cost of energy for all Duke Energy electric customers in Florida. Duke Energy does not aim to profit from this program.
The Clean Energy Connection (CEC) program uses a community “shared solar” program model, which means that solar power generating sites are supported by multiple community subscribers who earn bill credits based on the renewable energy their subscription share produces. Customers participate in CEC by paying a monthly subscription fee, and in turn have two line items on their bill each month: the subscription fee and the bill credit. CEC subscriptions help support solar plants in Florida and add more clean renewable energy to the grid.
CEI is an optional program whereby customers can foster and promote the use of renewable energy through the purchase of RECs directly from Duke Energy Florida's renewable energy resources. The solar facilities used for CEI RECs are different than the sites that customers subscribe to support through CEC. With CEI, participating Non-residential customers decide how many RECs they would like to purchase over the 1,000 REC minimum. After a purchase agreement is signed, the participating customer can choose to pay for their REC purchase either as an additional one-time charge on their Duke Energy bill or via a separate invoice. Then after payment at the appropriate time, the RECs will be retired on the customer's behalf by Duke Energy, and the participating customer has exclusive rights to apply the renewable attributes to their organization's sustainability goals.
- Yes. Customers can participate in both the CEI and Clean Energy Connection programs; however, currently, the CEC program is fully subscribed for large commercial and industrial customers.
