Clean Energy Impact

Clean Energy Impact (CEI) is an optional program that provides participating residential & business customers with a simple, affordable way to support local renewable energy through the purchase of renewable energy certificates directly from Duke Energy Florida’s renewable energy resources.

Renewable energy certificates (RECs) are carefully measured and used to track renewable energy from the point of generation to a purchaser of each REC. Each REC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable energy sources (e.g., solar, wind, biomass, or hydro) that displaces electricity on the grid that would otherwise come from traditional sources (e.g., oil and coal). The CEI program furthers Duke Energy’s commitment to meet the various energy needs of our customers. Through CEI, Duke Energy is offering a measurable way for interested customers to support local renewable energy and to achieve sustainability goals. The program also aims to reduce energy costs for all Florida customers through the sale of RECs directly from Duke Energy Florida’s renewable energy resources.

Any Duke Energy customer in Florida who is current on their bill is eligible for participation in the program.

As a Duke Energy customer, you can purchase "blocks" of RECs through the program. Each block represents 250 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy and costs $0.88 per month. CEI has a one-block minimum purchase of $0.88 per month.

The CEI price per block equals one quarter (25%) of the program’s price per REC.

Duke Energy sets the CEI REC price annually each August, which is based on the monthly average REC market rate for the previous 12 months. In addition to the average REC market rate, the CEI REC price also includes an administrative fee, which is intended to cover Duke Energy’s costs of operating the program. The administrative fee is also reviewed annually to evaluate if fees collected match the administrative expenses of the program and is adjusted based on yearly cost projections. However, the administrative fee will never exceed 20% of the average REC market rate.

After the minimum one-block REC purchase supporting 250 kWh of renewable energy, you can purchase as many additional 250-kWh blocks of RECs as you like.

We recommend using the calculator above to enter in your home’s average usage in kWh. The calculator will output how many blocks are required to match your home’s average monthly usage, as well as the monthly cost to purchase that number of blocks. The electricity generated from the renewable resources is put into the overall power-supply grid along with electricity from all our other resources. Buying RECs through the program does not mean that renewable energy is being delivered straight from the source to your home.

There are currently 13 solar facilities being utilized for CEI, these sites are spread throughout 10 counties in Florida, and all are owned and operated by Duke Energy. The sites vary in size and renewable energy generation capacity from 5 to 75 MW.

 

Your personal support does make a difference! Every block purchased through the program promotes the use of environmentally friendly green energy, thereby reducing the dependence on fossil fuels to generate energy. Your support of this renewable energy has a greenhouse benefit that is similar to removing cars from the road or planting acres of forest, depending on your monthly purchase size.

By participating in CEI, you are not only supporting local, renewable energy, you will also be helping all Duke Energy Florida customers. The revenue created from the sale of Duke Energy Florida RECs will be used to lower the cost of energy for all Duke Energy electric customers in Florida. Duke Energy does not aim to profit from this program.

Duke Energy Florida residential customers can begin the program enrollment process by checking their eligibility for the program by signing into their online account.

To remain a participant, you must purchase at least the one-block (250-kWh) REC minimum of $0.88. You can add or subtract blocks at any time by contacting us at CleanEnergyImpactFL@duke-energy.com.

Participation is voluntary. There are no cancellation fees. You may withdraw from the program at any time with 30 days’ notice.

The Clean Energy Connection program uses a community “shared solar” program model, which means that solar power generating sites are supported by multiple community subscribers who earn bill credits based on the renewable energy their subscription share produces. Customers participate in CEC by paying a monthly subscription fee, and in turn have two line items on their bill each month: the subscription fee and the bill credit. CEC subscriptions help support solar plants in Florida and add more clean renewable energy to the grid.

CEI is an optional program whereby customers can foster and promote the use of renewable energy through the purchase of RECs directly from Duke Energy Florida’s renewable energy resources. The solar facilities used for CEI RECs are different than the sites that customers subscribe to support through CEC. With CEI, participating residential customers will just have one line item on their bill each month for the blocks of RECs that they choose to purchase.

Yes. Customers can participate in both the CEI and Clean Energy Connection programs.
