Energy Choice Ohio & Aggregation

Energy Choice Ohio & Aggregation
Energy Choice Ohio Overview
Energy Choice Ohio is a program that allows many customers to shop for the energy they use at their home or business. Individuals can choose a competitive supplier or Duke Energy Ohio to supply their electricity and/or natural gas.
If customers choose Duke Energy Ohio as their supplier, we’ll buy energy on their behalf and pass along the costs on their monthly bill. Duke Energy Ohio does not make money on these energy supply charges and we will continue to provide safe and reliable service no matter which company a customer chooses to supply energy.
What is Aggregation?
Depending on where you are located, your community may participate in something called aggregation.
- Under aggregation, a community contracts with a supplier to provide electricity and/or natural gas to the community instead of Duke Energy Ohio.
- When this occurs, residents receive a notice from Duke Energy Ohio about this change, and are offered a brief period to opt out if they prefer to keep Duke Energy as their supplier.
Those who do not opt out timely will begin to receive their electricity or natural gas from the supplier chosen by the community. Customers not already receiving energy from a competitive supplier should receive a letter from their city, township or the new energy supplier that explains the program, cost, terms and deadline for opting out.
- Some energy companies will charge a fee if you cancel your agreement or switch to another supplier before the end of the contract period. Be sure to understand the conditions of the contract.
- Most customers will continue to receive one bill from Duke Energy each month. It will include charges from Duke Energy for the cost to deliver energy to their home or business.
- A separate "supplier" charge will also appear in the Billing Details section of the bill for the energy charges from the supplier.
- Some suppliers will send their own separate bill and the customer will receive two bills—one from the supplier for the energy itself and one from Duke Energy for delivering the energy.
