Basic Safety & Troubleshooting Tips

If you are having difficulty accessing a Duke Energy-labeled charging unit, to help proceed safely, follow these simple troubleshooting steps and refer to this safety information document.

Inspect the charger

If there are visible signs of damage to the charger equipment such as cuts, gouges or broken dispenser pieces, do not use the charger and call the 800 number on the charger to report.

Check your app and network provider

Be sure that you are using the correct app such as Shell Recharge, ChargeUp or EV Connect.

You must also have an account set up with the correct network provider and have an adequate balance with the network (if charging session requires payment) in order to start a charging session.

If the charger indicates that you are online and connected but you are still unable to start a charging session, call the customer service number on the charger and ask to start a charging session remotely.

Check the “Emergency Stop” button

If the charger will not operate, check to see if the charger screen is displaying "Emergency Stop” and/or if the red, mushroom-shaped Emergency Stop button is depressed. (Note: The Emergency Stop button locks in the OFF position.) If so, reset the normal operating position by either pulling out or slightly rotating the Emergency Stop button. Allow up to 3 minutes for the charger to initiate a charge.

Charger delivering less than my EV’s rated kW

Your EV dictates the charging rate dispensed from the charger to the EV. When the battery reaches 80% charged, it will significantly reduce the charging rate, regardless of your EV's rated kW. Each EV has its own unique maximum charging rate that is independent of the charger.
