Aicholtz Substation Expansion and
Transmission Line Relocation

Transmission Investments

Reliability is a responsibility that Duke Energy takes seriously. We are dedicated to modernizing, improving and upgrading the electric system to help meet the growing energy needs of our communities. As part of our commitment to provide reliable energy for homes, schools and businesses in Clermont County, Duke Energy is making reliability improvements to our Aicholtz Substation located at Clough Pike in Union Township, Ohio.

The substation expansion is on Duke Energy property and the transmission line relocation will take place within existing easements.

The improvements will be constructed in two phases. We will begin the first phase in October 2024 and continue through fall 2025. Upon completion, the second phase will begin in spring 2026. We anticipate all substation and transmission line construction to be complete by December 2026.

Project Need

The Aicholtz Substation expansion and upgrades will help build a stronger energy infrastructure, improve the reliability of the area’s electric service and support the Clermont County community’s growing energy needs.

Project Description

To accommodate the new 138/13-kilovolt (kV) transformers, we will remove the existing 69/13-kV transformers, associated structures, foundations and wires. The existing substation fence will expand approximately 50 feet to the east, 50 feet to the south and 25 feet to the north. A new 138-kV loop will be installed into the upgraded equipment inside the substation and supported by new H-frame structures and engineered poles.

In addition to the expansion and installation of equipment, we will modify an existing 138-kV transmission line and towers. This segment of the project will involve constructing seven new engineered steel structures with concrete foundations. We will install 1000 feet of new static wire, transfer 3284 feet of existing conductor and an approximate 500-foot section of new transmission line.

Portions of this reliability improvement project will undergo a regulatory filing.

Beginning December 2024, in some areas, workers may clear vegetation prior to the pole work as the utility easement area must be clear for safe access. Construction on the transmission line relocations is expected to begin in fall 2024 followed by the removal of existing foundations and poles. In 2025, we will expand the substation fence, continue pole and line construction along with the retirement of the existing transformer bank. We anticipate being complete with the first phase of construction by fall 2025. We anticipate all substation and transmission line construction to be complete by December 2026.

An application to construct, operate and maintain the required regulatory portions of this project has been approved by the Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) in July 2024. Letters were also sent to neighboring property owners and tenants that explained how they could participate in the OPSB process.
