Project Overview
North and North Central Florida have experienced steady growth and increased demand for electricity in recent years. That’s why we’re making important investments to help support the community’s energy needs with more than a dozen infrastructure projects in the region. Among these projects is an upgrade of an existing transmission line between the Archer Substation and the Haile switching station located at 4010 NW CR 235 in Newberry. We will also upgrade the existing Archer Substation located at 15401 SW 103rd Ave. All combined, the projects are designed to help meet the growing energy needs of Alachua County residents, Duke Energy customers and those of other utilities. Construction of the new projects will begin in 2025.
Archer Area Projects at a Glance
- (In progress since 2022) Upgrading and improving an existing 33-mile transmission line between the Archer Substation and a substation in Ocala. Replacing H-frame structures with stronger, smaller land-footprint monopoles and replacing the line with higher-capacity wires. Adding a second transmission line along the same route in the existing corridor.
- Upgrading an existing approximately 21-mile transmission line from the Archer Substation north to Gilchrist County. Replacing the existing H-frame structures with stronger, smaller land-footprint monopoles and replacing the line with higher-capacity wires.
- Upgrading Archer Substation with modern equipment and reconfiguring the lines entering and leaving the substation over the next several years so the substation can support more capacity and operate more efficiently.
- All work will take place within existing Duke Energy easement area and/or on Duke Energy-owned land.

Reducing Inconveniences
Duke Energy will reduce as much as possible any temporary inconveniences caused to private property and the sensitive areas within the project work zone.
- Property owners within the utility easement area should expect notifications before any work takes place. This may include letters, postcards, voice messages or in-person conversations.
- Where needed, protective mats will be used to help minimize the impact of heavy trucks and equipment on the soil, grass and environment.
- Once work is complete, the land will be restored as closely as possible to previous conditions.
