Linneman Upgrade Project

Linneman Substation and Transmission Line Upgrades

Working to improve reliability for our customers in Hamilton County.

Project Update

Duke Energy is leasing property at 7134 Cleves Warsaw Road in relation to this project. The property will be used as a laydown area to store equipment, tools and construction vehicles. We will be restoring the laydown area to its original condition when it’s determined it is no longer necessary for our construction.

Project Overview

We are committed to providing dependable energy to the communities we serve. As part of that commitment, we’re improving our electric transmission infrastructure – the backbone of our state’s energy system – powering our communities and building the smarter, cleaner energy future that customers expect. With that in mind, Duke Energy is building a new Linneman Substation with modernized equipment and retiring the outdated substation at 1355 Linneman Road in Green Township. 

Project Details

The updated substation will be located on Duke Energy property in front of the existing substation, and it will be larger  – approximately 160 feet by 200 feet. The fence line of the future substation will be located approximately 37 feet from Linneman Road. The new substation will provide added capacity to support future community development as well as help to support the reliability of the area’s electric service. Once the new substation is energized, the old Linneman substation will be retired and removed.

Construction on the transmission line looping into the new substation will involve the removal of four existing wood utility poles and installing six steel poles, as well as one steel supporting pole approximately 40 feet tall. The transmission poles will be approximately 100 feet in height – 5 to 10 feet taller than the current structures to further support the reliability of the electric system.

We will also be upgrading the distribution lines that carry energy into your schools, homes, hospitals and businesses. These improvements will help reduce outages and speed restoration.

Much of this equipment will be built under the existing high-voltage transmission line that carries energy over long distances between substations. This work will involve the replacement of 36 wood utility poles with steel transmission poles. This portion of the work is mostly roadside from Neeb Road to Anderson Ferry. The pole heights could range from 85 to 100 feet to address modern clearance standards between the transmission and distribution power lines and communication lines. Portions of this work may involve using cranes during construction. Road restrictions may be needed to provide for the safety of the crews and the public. Drivers are asked to use caution and slow down as they approach the work zone. 

Other portions of the distribution work may involve shorter wood pole construction in backyards. Landowners will be directly contacted prior to the work on private properties.

Project Schedule

  • March 2024: Substation construction begins
  • April 2024: Transmission line construction 
  • June 2024: Restoration phase for the line work
  • September 2024: Installation of substation equipment
  • July 2025: Energize new substation
  • March 2026: Remove old substation

Preconstruction Activities

Neighbors will be seeing numerous trucks hauling fill dirt to the substation site during the first stage of the project as the new site is leveled and prepared for construction. The vegetation around the existing substation will also be removed on Duke Energy property prior to the future construction.

In order to maintain the transmission line, it’s critical our workers have safe and unobstructed access. Duke Energy hires qualified, trained tree experts to inspect and clear vegetation from the electric lines on our system. If you’re affected by tree or other vegetation removal, you will be contacted by one of our team members.
