Ross Prairie to Shaw Transmission Project

Ross Prairie to Shaw

Transmission Project

Current Activities

Duke Energy selected a route for the new Ross Prairie to Shaw Transmission line. The next step is surveying and field investigations to determine the easement boundaries. See route map.

About the Project

To help provide safe and reliable electricity to those who live and work in Ocala and Marion County, Duke Energy is building a new transmission line between the existing Ross Prairie and Shaw substations.

The Ross Prairie to Shaw Transmission Line will provide an additional source of power to the area.

The new line is one of more than a dozen grid improvement projects Duke Energy is undertaking across Marion, Levy and Alachua counties. Together, these projects will help meet the growing energy needs of Florida, aid in improving grid resiliency (restoring power after storms), and support the development of clean energy.

Project Details

  • Construct a new, approximately 19-mile, 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line from the existing Ross Prairie Substation to the existing Shaw Substation.
  • Upgrade the existing Ross Prairie and Shaw substations.
  • The new transmission lines will be built above ground using steel and concrete poles
  • Pole height typically ranges from 90 to 110 feet, but some could be up to 140 feet.
  • The selected route maximizes the use of existing easements. New easements and temporary construction easements will be needed in some areas.

Public Participation

Public participation is a vital part of Duke Energy’s siting process for electric transmission projects.
We gathered input from the public through our project website, phone calls, emails, and other communication channels during the comment period that ended on Nov. 30, 2023.

Information received from the public was incorporated into our planning, analysis, and selection of the route.
