Largo, Belleair & Belleair Bluffs Grid Improvements
Duke Energy is working hard in your community to improve reliability, reduce outages, strengthen the power grid against severe weather and prepare our system to serve a growing area. As part of this commitment, we are conducting a multiyear grid improvement project in the Largo, Belleair and Belleair Bluffs areas.
About the Project
- Strengthen the power grid to reduce power outages: Upgrading power lines, poles and essential equipment
- Improve reliability and reduce outage time: Installing smart, self-healing technology that automatically detects power outages and quickly reroutes power to restore service faster
- Expanding capacity and preparing the area for sustainable growth: Completing substation improvements, new underground and overhead power lines to provide more capacity to the area
Work will begin in 2024 to extend self-healing technology along the main power lines in the Largo, Belleair and Belleair Bluffs areas. Crews are installing automatic sensors and communication equipment, control boxes on poles, switching equipment and reclosers that can automatically isolate outages and restore power. We’ll also be upgrading poles and electric wire in some areas.
Pole and line upgrades, as well as vegetation management, will take place along several streets and behind homes in some areas where line and pole work need to be conducted in the Largo, Belleair and Belleair Bluffs areas. Duke Energy will communicate with customers affected by this work in advance of the beginning of the work.
Crews are currently conducting field assessments to evaluate and plan for future undergrounding projects. You may be approached by representatives to discuss plans on or near your property.
Duke Energy is working to strengthen the electric grid, making it more resistant to severe weather and better able to restore power quickly.
As part of this effort, we identify trees that require trimming and/or removal. While the trees that thrive throughout our 92,000 square miles of service are a source of tremendous pride, they are also one of the main causes of power outages.
Arborists working for Duke Energy use pruning techniques in accordance with the American National Standard Institute and the International Society of Arboriculture. In landscaped areas, debris will be cleaned up and disposed of by Duke Energy. In non-landscaped areas, debris may be left on-site to biodegrade.
Trimming and/or removal may be needed to complete the reliability projects scheduled for your neighborhood.

Customers impacted by work should expect:
- Road closures during various phases
- Backlot access, as needed, to perform maintenance and upgrade overhead wires
- Weekend work is possible
- Planned outages, although unlikely, may be required. Customers will be notified in advance should a temporary outage be necessary while crews work
- Construction equipment and work crews will be present in work areas around the community
These grid improvements are needed to connect the upgraded Taylor Avenue Substation to new upgraded lines in the area, support ongoing residential and commercial expansion in the area and address potential reliability issues and help improve service.

- Support current and future growth and development in the area
- Improve overall reliability of service to customers
- Strengthen the grid against power outages from severe weather and cyberthreats
- Provide smarter options to restore power faster using self-healing technologies
